Donald Trump Jr and his wife Bettina confirmed Monday that a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin paid for part of their May wedding, following a ProPublica investigation that revealed Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the three-day celebration across two exclusive private islands.
Kremlev, head of the International Boxing Association and a member of Putin’s inner circle, covered the rental of one island where the reception was held and guests stayed, plus other major expenses including a fireworks display, according to ProPublica’s report citing records and three sources familiar with the event.

In a joint statement posted to Bettina Trump’s Instagram after the story broke, the couple characterized Kremlev’s contributions as “an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful.”
What a Putin Ally Paid For
The wedding payments came from an IBA-affiliated entity in Dubai that the boxing association uses for financial transactions, according to ProPublica. Kremlev’s organization has been backed by Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom.
The guest list was intimate — about 50 people, mostly immediate family, close friends, and business partners. The ceremony itself was limited to 18 guests. Kremlev reportedly skipped the ceremony but attended the reception with a large contingent of Russians, who sometimes stood apart speaking Russian, confusing other guests.
Days before the wedding, Kremlev traveled to China as part of a delegation with Putin. The month prior, the Russian president awarded him the Order of Friendship, a state honor. The Ukrainian government has sanctioned Kremlev, citing his ties to Putin and Russian security services.
Democrats Demand Answers
Robert Garcia, ranking Democrat on the House oversight committee, posted on social media: “Why did a Russian oligarch close to Putin fund Trump Jr.’s wedding? Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the President’s son. What did he get in return? We need answers.”
Trump Jr has emerged as a leading campaign surrogate and has been floated as a potential political heir, making the oligarch’s access to the president’s family a focus of congressional scrutiny.
Donald Sherman, president and CEO of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said Congress should consider requiring financial disclosure statements from a president’s adult children. “We know that private companies and foreign governments have been seeking to gain Don Jr’s favor in order to serve their own financial interests,” Sherman told ProPublica. “It’s important that there is a measure of transparency when folks tied to the Russian government are lavishing the president’s rich adult son with expensive gifts.”
He added: “It’s one thing if, in the nature of this friendship, there’s a mutual exchange of lavish gifts. It’s another if someone’s daddy becomes president and then all of a sudden this new friend starts giving gifts — that context very much matters.”
Retired FBI official Frank Montoya Jr told ProPublica: “If I’m paying for your wedding, at some point, you’re going to owe me something. This should be unthinkable for the son of the president.”
The Friendship Question
It remains unclear why Kremlev helped fund the wedding and why he attended, given that he appears to have met Trump Jr only recently. The executive vice-president of the Trump Organization has a personal net worth estimated around $300 million.

Alexander Lagutin, a businessperson with senior roles at a Russian defense contractor and a state-backed energy company, had accompanied Kremlev on the China trip. Kremlev’s deputy at the IBA, Elena Sobol, attended the wedding.
President Trump did not attend his son’s wedding. “He’d like me to go, but it’s going to be just a small, little private affair,” Trump told reporters days before the event. “I said, you know, this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things.”
A Trump Jr spokesperson told ProPublica that Kremlev “is a personal friend of Don” and “not someone he has a business relationship with,” but did not deny that the oligarch helped fund the wedding.
