Why Venus Has No Moon

Venus is the only terrestrial planet in the inner solar system without a natural satellite. Mercury is too small and too close to the Sun to retain one. Earth has the Moon. Mars has Phobos and Deimos. Venus, nearly identical to Earth in diameter and mass, has none.

The new study, reported by Reuters, proposes that Venus did have a moon in the distant past — but that the planet swallowed it. The research adds to a decades-long debate over whether Venus ever hosted a moon, and if so, what happened to it.

A Planet That Orbits Alone

Venus and Earth are often called twins: both are rocky, both sit in the inner solar system, and both are nearly the same size. Yet Earth has a large moon that stabilizes its axial tilt and drives tides, while Venus spins slowly in the opposite direction of most planets, with no satellite at all.

The Reuters report does not detail the study’s methodology, timeline, or the hypothesized size of the moon. Venus’s thick atmosphere and surface temperatures hot enough to melt lead make direct geological evidence difficult to obtain from Earth.
